The ruler is raised by the midbump to prevent the residual ink or lead from leaving a secondary mark on the page. It is typically used with either a mechanical or clutch pencil, the lead is extended longer then it would be from regular drawing or construction. The pencil is held straight so it is perpendicular to the paper and creates a right angle with the ruler. (Note the lead should be touching the ruler, not the pencil itself.)
