Bee-Bot / Blue-Bot Tunnels

The Bee-Bot / Blue-Bot Tunnels are a simple but effective way to make classroom coding challenges more engaging, encouraging pupils to plan accurate routes for their programmable floor robots.

The set contains three colourful tunnels, each designed to allow Bee-Bot and Blue-Bot to travel through. They can be positioned on Bee-Bot mats or other suitable surfaces, giving teachers an easy way to add obstacles, destinations and additional challenges to programming activities.

Rather than simply programming Bee-Bot from one square to another, pupils need to consider how they will approach and pass through a tunnel successfully. This encourages children to plan a sequence, predict the robot's movement, test their program and make corrections when their first attempt doesn't work as expected.

The tunnels are particularly useful for introducing progressively more challenging activities. Teachers might begin by asking pupils to travel through a single tunnel before creating routes that require Bee-Bot to navigate through several tunnels in a particular order.

They can also be incorporated into imaginative and cross-curricular activities. A tunnel could become the entrance to a building, a bridge, a cave or part of a pupil-created story, allowing children to combine coding with creative play and communication.

Classroom Activity Ideas

Create a simple route with one tunnel and ask pupils to program Bee-Bot through it. As their confidence grows, add additional tunnels and challenge pupils to visit them in a particular sequence.

Children could also design their own Bee-Bot environment around the tunnels, adding roads, buildings or landmarks before writing or explaining the instructions required to complete their route.
