More Information
The Bee-Bot / Blue-Bot People Who Help Us Mat provides a fun, cross-curricular way to introduce young learners to coding while exploring the people and services they encounter in everyday life.
The mat features a variety of familiar community locations and services, giving teachers an engaging starting point for conversations about people who help us and the roles they play. Pupils can choose a destination before planning and programming Bee-Bot or Blue-Bot to travel across the mat to reach it.
Programming each journey helps children develop important early computational thinking skills. Pupils must consider the route, break it into individual steps, enter their commands in the correct order and then observe whether their program works as intended. If Bee-Bot reaches the wrong location, they can identify the incorrect command and try again.
The mat is particularly useful for combining coding with early years and primary classroom topics about communities and occupations. Teachers can create challenges based around different scenarios, encouraging children to think about which person or service could help in a particular situation before programming the robot to the appropriate location.
It also provides plenty of opportunities for developing speaking, listening and directional vocabulary, as pupils explain their chosen route and work together to solve programming challenges.
Key Features
- People Who Help Us theme – Supports classroom learning about familiar occupations, services and the local community.
- Introduces early programming – Helps pupils understand sequences of instructions and simple algorithms.
- Develops computational thinking – Encourages planning, prediction, testing and debugging.
- Supports directional language – Reinforces vocabulary including forwards, backwards, left and right.
- Cross-curricular learning – Combines coding with topics relating to communities, occupations and the world around us.
- Encourages communication – Ideal for pupils to discuss routes, explain their reasoning and solve challenges together.
- Flexible classroom activities – Teachers can create simple destination challenges or more complex journeys involving several stops.
- Compatible with Bee-Bot and Blue-Bot – Designed for use with both TTS programmable floor robots.
Classroom Activity Ideas
Teachers could give pupils simple scenarios such as identifying who could help in a particular situation and then ask them to program Bee-Bot to the relevant location. Children can also create routes for their classmates, predict how many commands will be required or explain a journey using directional language before programming the robot.
