More Information
The Bee-Bot / Blue-Bot Obstacle Course turns floor robot programming into an engaging problem-solving challenge, allowing pupils to design their own course before working out how to successfully navigate it.
The set contains 18 individual pieces – 10 walls, 6 doorways and 2 archways – which can be arranged and rearranged to create a wide variety of routes. Teachers can easily change the layout between activities or allow pupils to design their own challenges for Bee-Bot or Blue-Bot.
Once the course is built, pupils must plan a route and create the correct sequence of commands to guide their robot around walls and through openings. This physical approach makes programming concepts easier to understand, as children can immediately see how each instruction affects Bee-Bot's movement.
If Bee-Bot bumps into a wall or misses a doorway, pupils have an opportunity to debug their program by identifying where their sequence went wrong and making the necessary changes. TTS specifically designed the resource to support the development of programming, logical reasoning, problem-solving and debugging skills.
The course can also grow with pupils' abilities. Teachers can begin with straightforward routes containing just a few obstacles before progressing to more complicated layouts that require longer sequences and more careful planning.
Key Features
- 18-piece obstacle course – Includes 10 wall pieces, 6 doorways and 2 archways.
- Create different layouts – Move and rearrange the pieces to produce new challenges for each lesson.
- Develops programming skills – Pupils plan and enter sequences of commands to navigate the course.
- Encourages debugging – Children can identify errors when their robot takes the wrong route and adjust their program.
- Supports logical thinking – Pupils need to predict movements and work out an effective route through the obstacles.
- Progressive learning – Courses can be made simpler or more challenging to suit different levels of experience.
- Ideal for collaborative activities – Pupils can design obstacle courses and programming challenges for one another.
- Durable classroom resource – Designed for repeated use in an educational environment.
- Suitable for Bee-Bot and Blue-Bot activities – Create physical programming challenges for TTS floor robots.
Classroom Activity Ideas
Start with a simple course containing one doorway and a few walls. Ask pupils to predict the route, write or explain their sequence and then program Bee-Bot to complete it.
For a more advanced challenge, one group can design an obstacle course for another group to solve. Pupils can compare different solutions, investigate which route requires the fewest commands or deliberately include an error in a program for classmates to find and correct.
