The Bee-Bot / Blue-Bot Modular Road 29pcs adds a creative construction element to classroom coding activities, allowing pupils to build a route before programming their robot to navigate it.

The set contains 25 interchangeable road pieces, including straight sections, turns and roundabouts, which can be arranged in different combinations to create a wide variety of routes. A further 4 end pieces featuring photographs of destinations can be added to create a clear goal for each programming challenge.

Rather than following a fixed floor mat, pupils can design and alter the road themselves. They can then plan the sequence of commands needed to move Bee-Bot or Blue-Bot from its starting point to a chosen destination. If the robot doesn't follow the intended route, children can review their instructions, identify the problem and adjust their program.

This makes the Modular Road particularly useful for developing sequencing, logical thinking, directional language, prediction and debugging skills. Teachers can begin with simple routes for younger pupils before introducing longer journeys, junctions, roundabouts and multiple destinations as children's confidence develops.

The open-ended format also works well for pair and group activities, with pupils collaborating to construct roads, set challenges for one another and find different ways of reaching a destination.
