Bee-Bot / Blue-Bot Farmyard Mat

The Bee-Bot / Blue-Bot Farmyard Mat provides an engaging environment for combining early programming with learning about farms, animals and the world around us.

Featuring a colourful illustrated farmyard scene, the mat gives pupils a range of destinations to navigate between using Bee-Bot or Blue-Bot. Children can choose where they want their robot to travel, plan an appropriate route and then program the sequence of commands needed to reach their destination.

This hands-on approach helps pupils develop important early coding concepts including sequencing, algorithms, prediction and debugging. If Bee-Bot doesn't arrive at the intended location, children can examine their sequence, work out which instruction needs to change and try their program again.

The farm setting also provides plenty of opportunities for cross-curricular learning. Teachers can use the mat to introduce or reinforce topics involving farm animals, food and farming, environments and everyday life. Pupils can identify different features on the mat, discuss what happens on a farm and create stories or challenges based around Bee-Bot's journey.

The mat can be used for simple introductory activities or progressively more challenging programming tasks, making it a useful resource as pupils' confidence with Bee-Bot and Blue-Bot develops.

Classroom Activity Ideas

Ask pupils to program Bee-Bot to visit a particular farm animal or location. Once they are comfortable with simple routes, introduce challenges involving several destinations that must be visited in a particular order.

Teachers can also incorporate storytelling by giving Bee-Bot a job to complete around the farm. Pupils can plan the journey, explain their sequence and then test whether their program successfully completes the task.
