More Information
The Bee-Bot / Blue-Bot Number Line Mat combines hands-on programming with early numeracy, helping pupils explore numbers and mathematical operations through physical movement.
The mat features numbers 1 to 10, accompanied by engaging illustrations representing each quantity. Pupils can place Bee-Bot or Blue-Bot on a starting number and program it to move forwards or backwards along the number line, providing a visual and practical way to explore counting, number sequences, addition and subtraction.
For example, pupils can start Bee-Bot on 4 and program it to move three steps forwards to demonstrate 4 + 3 = 7. For subtraction, the robot can begin on a larger number and move backwards. TTS specifically recommends these types of activities for exploring addition, subtraction and inverse operations.
The simple linear layout also makes this a useful introductory Bee-Bot mat. Children can initially concentrate on forward and backward movement without having to plan left and right turns, making it easier to understand how individual commands control the robot.
Alongside numeracy, pupils develop important early coding skills by planning sequences, predicting where their robot will finish and checking whether their program produces the expected result.
Key Features
- Combines maths and coding – Reinforces early numeracy while introducing programming concepts.
- Numbers 1–10 – Clear numerals are accompanied by illustrations representing each quantity.
- Supports number recognition and counting – Provides a physical and visual approach to working with numbers.
- Explore addition and subtraction – Move Bee-Bot forwards to add and backwards to subtract.
- Develops sequencing skills – Pupils work out how many movement commands are required to reach a target number.
- Encourages prediction – Ask children to predict where Bee-Bot will finish before pressing GO.
- Supports problem-solving and debugging – Pupils can review their commands when Bee-Bot doesn't reach the expected number.
- Durable vinyl construction – Designed to withstand regular classroom use.
- Compatible with Bee-Bot and Blue-Bot – Designed for use with both TTS programmable floor robots.
Classroom Activity Ideas
Ask pupils to start Bee-Bot on a particular number and program it to reach another. They can work out how many steps forwards or backwards are required before testing their answer.
The mat can also be used to physically demonstrate number sentences. For example, start on 5 and move four spaces forwards to calculate 5 + 4, then move four spaces backwards to demonstrate the related subtraction calculation.
Teachers can also give pupils a target number and challenge them to find different calculations that will make Bee-Bot finish on that number.
