Bee-Bot / Blue-Bot Countryside Mat

The Bee-Bot / Blue-Bot Countryside Mat provides an engaging setting for pupils to practise early programming skills while exploring a countryside environment.

Designed specifically for use with Bee-Bot and Blue-Bot, the mat features countryside animals, roads and different rural locations that can be incorporated into a wide range of classroom challenges. Pupils can select a destination, plan the route their robot needs to take and then create a sequence of commands to get there.

This hands-on approach helps children understand that a program is made up of a sequence of instructions. When Bee-Bot doesn't arrive at the intended location, pupils can review their commands, identify what went wrong and adjust their program – providing a simple and accessible introduction to testing and debugging.

The countryside theme also creates opportunities for cross-curricular learning. Teachers can use the illustrations to discuss animals, habitats, the countryside and geographical features while reinforcing positional and directional vocabulary. TTS specifically highlights the mat for developing programming and directional language alongside geography-based learning.

The Countryside Mat also forms part of the Bee-Bot World range. Up to four compatible Bee-Bot World mats can be joined together to create a larger environment, allowing teachers to introduce longer routes and more challenging programming activities as pupils become more confident.

Classroom Activity Ideas

Ask pupils to choose an animal or countryside location and program Bee-Bot to reach it. Activities can progress to visiting several locations in a particular order, describing a route using directional language, predicting the number of commands required or creating a route for another group to solve.
