Bee-Bot / Blue-Bot Alphabet Mat

The Bee-Bot / Blue-Bot Alphabet Mat is a cross-curricular classroom resource designed to bring together early literacy and hands-on coding in an engaging and accessible way.

Featuring both upper and lower case letters, the mat provides teachers with plenty of opportunities to incorporate Bee-Bot and Blue-Bot into literacy lessons. Pupils can program their robot to travel to a particular letter, find the beginning or ending sound of a word, or navigate between letters to create simple words and names.

Alongside literacy development, every activity provides an opportunity to practise important early programming concepts. Children must decide where they want Bee-Bot to go, plan the route, arrange their commands in the correct sequence and then test their program.

If the robot doesn't arrive at the intended letter, pupils can review their instructions and make changes, helping to develop logical thinking, problem-solving and early debugging skills.

The mat is particularly useful for teachers looking for ways to introduce coding across different areas of the curriculum. Instead of programming being taught in isolation, pupils can reinforce familiar literacy concepts while gaining practical experience of sequencing and controlling a programmable device.

Classroom Activity Ideas

Teachers can start with a simple "Find the Letter" activity, asking pupils to program Bee-Bot to a chosen letter.

As pupils become more confident, try challenges such as finding the first letter of a spoken word, travelling between upper and lower case versions of a letter, spelling a pupil's name or programming a sequence between several letters to form a simple word.

Pupils can also work in pairs, with one child creating a literacy challenge and the other planning and programming the route to solve it.
