The series presents exercises in inferential comprehension, where pupils must use common sense and reasoning. Series progresses in both difficulty and maturity. Perfect for pupils who can read but 'struggle to read between the lines'.

In the books pupils are asked to read passages of text and answer questions relating to them. The answers to these questions are not directly stated in the text and so pupils must read between the lines, using common sense and reasoning.

Practising Punctuation consists of 5 titles designed for pupils at Key Stage 2 and 3, who need additional support to identify and use punctuation correctly in everyday situations. Each book addresses a wide range of punctuation rules arranged in units of two pages. The first page explains the punctuation rule and gives clear examples, together with a simple exercise for the pupil to complete. The second page provides a more complex task and / or extension exercise.

In addition each book provides regular test pages to check the pupil’s understanding of the rules addressed. A pupil record sheet at the back of the book allows the teacher to plot progress and record comments on individual achievement. There are also four Punctuation Puzzle pages to reinforce and revisit what the children have learned in each book. A Quick Reference Guide at the back of each book summarises the punctuation rules addressed in that book. Stride Ahead has been written for students who can read but have difficulty in understanding what they are reading.

Many believe that this is the result of their minds being too taken up with the mechanics of decoding the written language to be able to give adequate attention to meaning. Often these students become so adept at disguising their poor reading skills (by guesswork allied with contextual clues) that their teachers may not even be aware that they have a problem. In effect, they are on a ‘reading plateau’ and they often remain there throughout their school careers and on into their adult life.

In the late 70’s Keda Cowling created a unique syllable division which was incorporated into the reading manual Toe By Toe. Over the last few years this system has successfully taught thousands of people – dyslexics and non-dyslexics alike – to read (i.e. decode). This success has been due to the application of this easy-to-use syllable division and the structured over-teaching of the phonemes in question.

The aim of Stride Ahead is to make these phonemes so familiar to dyslexic students that they become able to recognise them instantaneously and without concentrated mental effort and thus they can get on with the process of understanding the text in front of them. Timing is the key to this process and careful timing forms the essence of the Stride Ahead method.
