Kitronik ZIP Stick 5 ZIP LEDs

    KI 35129
Each of Kitronik's new ZIP sticks has 5 individually addressable RGB LED’s. Each LED can be controlled independently and all LEDs are connected using the same three wire bus. Each LED can produce a full spectrum of colours independent to all of the other LEDs on the bus. Each ZIP LED has a Red, Green and Blue element within the LED, and each of these can achieve 256 levels of brightness. This results in 16,777,216 possible output colours. Multiple ZIP LEDs can be connected to produce longer strings/strips.

The LEDs used are based on the WS2812B part which is compatible with any WS2812B driver code. They can also be coded in the MakeCode Block/Javascript editor.

    Features:
  • Simple 3 wire connection for all LEDs.
  • Compatible with Adafruit NeoPixel and other WS2812B driver code.
  • Integrated reset circuit.
  • Supply voltage: 3.5V to 5V.

  • Dimensions:
  • Length: 34.3mm.

Picture of Kitronik USB RGB LED Strip with Pattern Selector

Kitronik USB RGB LED Strip with Pattern Selector

    KI 3561
The RGB LED Strip is a board designed for low power lighting applications, such as mood lamps, edge-lit signs, or accent lights. Its discreet size and straightforward layout make it perfect for creating custom lighting enclosures. The board has a micro USB power connector and has been designed so that power requirements are within the supply rating of a computer USB port (under 100mA). This means you can power it conveniently from a computer/laptop or a suitable power supply.

The PCB is approximately 80mm long and 8mm wide, featuring a single M3 mounting hole and flat underside allowing for easy securing within custom enclosures. The USB connector projects approximately 2mm from the end of the PCB. The end mounted switch is used to step between lighting patterns and turn off the LEDs. A remote switch can be connected in parallel with the PCB switch, via the pads provided, to allow remote mounting within an enclosure. The remote switch should be momentary, normally open. The use of a non-momentary switch may result in unpredictable operation.

The 5 full-colour RGB LEDs are mounted on the boards centre line and are driven by a small onboard chip which is pre-programmed to deliver 4 patterns, selected by pressing the button to step through them:
  • A great option for producing custom enclosures.
  • A rainbow fade that slowly fades through different colours.
  • Pressing the button will stop the fade on the current colour.
  • Pressing again will start a brightness fade (up and down) centred around the current colour.
  • Another press changes to an RGB chasing pattern.
  • A further press turns off the LEDs.
  • Pressing the button once more will bring the sequence back to the first rainbow fade pattern.

    Features:
  • A low power lighting solution ideal for creating custom enclosures for the desktop.
  • Featuring 5 full-colour RGB LEDs with 4 different user-selectable lighting patterns.
  • Advance through patterns with end mounted tactile button.
  • Add your own momentary switch in parallel for remote mounting on your projects.
  • The board is approx. 80mm long and 8mm wide.
  • There is a single M3 mounting hole and the underside of the board is completely flat, allowing for technically simple enclosure designs.
  • Power the board via the end mounted USB connector.
  • Forward current is typically 60mA at 5V, peak < 90mA.

  • Dimensions:
  • Length: 80mm.
  • Width: 8mm.
  • Max Height: 5mm.
  • Mounting Hole: M3.

Picture of Kitronik 'Mini' Prong Soil Moisture Sensor for Micro:bit

Kitronik 'Mini' Prong Soil Moisture Sensor for Micro:bit

    KI 56107
The Mini Prong soil sensor is a short version of the original Prong sensor that has been specially adapted for use with the Kitronik Greenhouse Kit for BBC micro:bit. The Mini Prong soil moisture sensor for BBC microbit is a sensor board that can be connected to a BBC micro:bit with crocodile clips to monitor the moisture present in the soil. The two conductive tines are placed into the soil. Any water or moisture in the soil will conduct to give an analogue voltage that can be read by the BBC micro:bit.

Mini Prong is powered from the 3V supply of the BBC micro:bit. Use either the USB or JST connector on the BBC micro:bit to power the circuit. The board has been designed to work with croc-clips, to connect between the Mini Prong and the BBC micro:bit. When fitted to the Mini Prong moisture sensor, the micro:bit can be coded via any of the micro:bit editors, such as the Microsoft MakeCode editor. The Datasheet at the foot of this page includes technical information and a MakeCode blocks coding example.

Note: To ensure that the mini Prong moisture sensor has a long and fulfilling life, it is better to write your code to perform a moisture check every so often rather than continuously. When the check is performed continuously it promotes rapid erosion of the electrodes.

    Features:
  • Measure soil moisture levels.
  • Attach to the micro:bit with crocodile clips.
  • Compatible with both BBC micro:bit V1 and BBC micro:bit V2.
  • Write code for it with any micro:bit coding editor.

  • Dimensions:
  • Length: 33mm.
  • Height: 43mm.
  • PCB Thickness: 1.6mm.

Picture of Kitronik Air Quality and Environmental Board for Micro:bit

Kitronik Air Quality and Environmental Board for Micro:bit

    KI 5674
Monitor and analyse the air you breathe with the Kitronik Air Quality Board. Great for home and the classroom. The Kitronik Air Quality Board provides a complete air monitoring and reporting solution for the BBC micro:bit. The wealth of onboard sensors and connection points allow you to collect extensive air quality data that can be stored in onboard memory and displayed on the OLED screen or transferred to a computer for analysis. Kitronik has also produced online MakeCode tutorials that are designed to introduce you to all of the key features of the board, see the 'Resources section below for links.

The Air Quality Board is perfect for the classroom. Run short or long-term classroom experiments, such as; monitoring air quality throughout the year, with and without the heating on. You can then use the collected data to produce graphs and more. Alternatively, it would make a great addition to an office/workshop, let science inform you when it's time to open those windows or remind you to ventilate your work area!

The board includes an integrated Edge Connector for your BBC micro:bit to easily slot into. The onboard sensors allow readings for temperature, pressure, humidity, air quality index, and eCO2. The real-time clock (RTC) and 1Mbit of onboard EEPROM memory enable timestamped data logging and long term data storage. There are also 3 status ZIP LEDs onboard which be used for visually displaying data. 3 of the BBC micro:bit's pins (Pins 0,1, and 2) are broken out to 0.1” pitch solder pads allowing for additional sensors or outputs. There are also 3V and GND pads for providing power to these devices.

The board can be powered via either the 3xAA battery holder or the micro USB connector. The voltage supply is controlled using a power switch, with a green status LED to indicate when the board is turned on. The board also produces a regulated 3V supply which is fed into the edge connector to power the inserted BBC micro:bit, removing the need to power the BBC micro:bit separately.

The board also features a connection point for a solar cell that can be used alongside rechargeable batteries to keep your experiments running for longer. NOTE: Please ensure the correct rechargeable batteries are fitted before charging, they should be NiMh.

Kitronik has produced custom MakeCode blocks to make the task of coding as straightforward as possible. You can add our custom blocks to the MakeCode editor by clicking on the cog icon in the top right of the editor and selecting Extensions. You can then type and enter Kitronik into the search bar and then click on the tile for the Air Quality Board blocks. The custom blocks will now be added to the editor's blocks menu. These blocks can also be added to the menu via this URL; https://github.com/KitronikLtd/pxt-kitronik-air-quality
