Conté colors is a drawing instrument made from pressed graphite or charcoal powder mixed on a wax or clay base. It was invented in 1795 by the Frenchman Nicolas-Jacques Conté, who had the idea of combining graphite with clay to deal with the shortage of English graphite caused by the naval blockade of France by the British navy during the Napoleonic Wars. Conté pencils had the advantage of being cheap to manufacture and easy to produce in varying degrees of hardness.

Conte a Paris was founded by Nicolas Jacques Conte who created the pencil as we know it by mixing graphite with clay and introducing the possibility of different degrees of hardness. Over the decades, the quality and depth of the Conte a Paris range has grown to offer a wide variety of techniques and effects that can be used for drawing, sketching and pastel work.

Colour Carre crayons give accurate and energetic strokes when the edges of the sticks are used and apply larger areas of colour by using the flat of the crayon. Square shaped crayons formulated using the finest pigments, for optimum brightness and intensity.

Conté Pastel Pencils offer the artist an excellent range of colours to be used either with one another or in conjunction with soft pastel, particularly for detail work.

The density of the lead is slightly harder in composition than soft pastel, allowing it to be sharpened with a traditional pencil sharpener (preferably suited specifically to coloured pencil) preventing it from crumbling. The fine lead allows for a smooth application and can be manipulated and blended using a stump or tortillon.
